EP. 1 - ARUN DEVA

”If you are like in modern medicine, just going to rely on the physician to address your issues and not get involved in the process (in fact, they don't encourage you to be involved in the process). Then you're very limited in the results you'll get. But when you involve your own self in the healing process, I find there's a little bit of magic in there.”
- Arun Deva

In this inaugural episode, host Anjali sits down with her father, Arun Deva, an Ayurvedic Yoga therapist who has been pioneering the integration of ancient healing practices since 1977. Arun shares his transformative journey from cultural upbringing to conscious healing practice, sparked by a health crisis in infancy that led him beyond modern medicine. Together, they explore the natural intersection of Ayurveda and Yoga, the importance of preserving cultural wisdom while making these practices accessible in the West, and Arun's innovative Bhavane Technique—an experimental approach that combines Ayurvedic treatments with Yoga therapy to address physical, mental, and spiritual health. From breathwork as the foundation of transformation to the evolution of holistic healthcare, this deeply personal conversation offers rare insights into lineage, cultural preservation, and the future of integrative medicine. Arun's decades of international teaching and clinical practice provide a rich foundation for understanding how these ancient sciences can create life-changing healing in our modern world.

Arun, AP, AYT, C-IAYT, E-RYT500, is a NAMA-certified senior ayurvedic practitioner, ayurvedic yoga therapist and an IAYT-certified yoga therapist and YA-certified teacher of vinyasa krama yoga in the Kriśnamacārya tradition (E-RYT500). He has had the privilege of serving on both the National and State Ayurvedic Associations’ Boards. Currently he also chairs NAMA’s Committee for Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy. Arun teaches internationally, lectures at conferences, writes for different publications—including peer-reviewed Ayurveda Journals—and has been featured on both radio and television. He is director of Ayurveda for Yoga Studies at Loyola Marymount University. Born and raised in India, where he began his yogic studies, Arun Deva has made his home in Los Angeles since 1977.
